Agencias .- Hasta ahora, hay cuatro animales en el mundo infectados con el nuevo coronavirus COVID-19, sin embargo, no significan ningún peligro de propagación, informó la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
Durante la conferencia para informar la situación del virus, la epidemióloga de la organización, Maria Van Kerkhove, detalló que se trata de dos perros registrados en Hong Kong, un gato en Bélgica y un tigre en el zoológico del Bronx en Nueva York, Estados Unidos.
No obstante, la especialista subrayó que si bien “las mascotas se pueden infectar, no juegan un papel importante en la propagación del nuevo coronavirus.
Además, la organización ha señalado que hasta el momento no existe ninguna evidencia de que las mascotas puedan transmitir el COVID-19 a los humanos.
Los coronavirus son una extensa familia de virus que son comunes entre los murciélagos y otros animales, tal como fue el caso del SARS-CoV asociado a las civetas y el MERS-CoV transmitido a través de dromedarios.
En ese sentido, la organización ha recomendado como medida de protección evitar el contacto directo al visitar mercados de animales vivos o en otras situaciones parecidas.
Asegurarse de que en todo momento se observen prácticas adecuadas de higiene de los alimentos, manipular con cuidado la carne, la leche y evitar el consumo de productos animales crudos.
