México -. Derivado de sus investigaciones con el veneno de alacrán, científicos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) descubrieron un antibiótico contra la tuberculosis.
Se trata de dos compuestos capaces de combatir a cepas de esta afección, resistentes a antibióticos, y a la bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, también conocida como estafilococo dorado.
Además, son efectivos para inhibir el crecimiento de células cancerígenas como: Jurkat (leucemia de células T), TE 671 (células de rhabdomiosarcona) y SH-SYSY(neuroblastoma de médula ósea), sin causar daño a células del tejido pulmonar.
Los expertos del Instituto de Biotecnología (IBt) aislaron, produjeron y patentaron ambos compuestos, con potencial para ser utilizados como fármacos contra tuberculosis, considerada la enfermedad más letal del mundo, pues cada día mueren 45 mil personas, y es contraída por aproximadamente 30 mil, aunque es prevenible y curable, resaltó Lourival Domingos Possani Postay.
Desde hace más de cuatro décadas, el equipo Possani Postay ha estudiado la estructura de los venenos de alacranes de México y 16 naciones más. Este trabajo ha permitido el reconocimiento del investigador, nacional e internacionalmente, por sus contribuciones al desarrollo de antivenenos de última generación.
